Why AI shopping agents can't buy from your store
Updated October 22, 2026
AI assistants are starting to do more than recommend products: some can follow a link, pick a variant and head to checkout for the shopper. When we test Shopify stores, the blockers are usually ordinary things a human shopper works around without noticing. Here are the ones we see most, and how to check for them.
1. The crawler is blocked before it starts
If robots.txt blocks an assistant's crawler, the assistant may never read your product pages. OpenAI, for example, says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs). Check for a broad Disallow: / or rules added by an app or a past developer.
2. Bot protection treats every agent as an attack
Aggressive firewall or rate-limit settings can answer automated visitors with errors or challenges instead of the page. Protecting your store is right; just make sure the rules don't also lock out the crawlers you want.
3. A pop-up covers the buy button
Email sign-up and discount pop-ups that open on page load can sit on top of "Add to cart". A person closes them; an automated agent may click the overlay instead. Delay pop-ups, or make sure they can be dismissed with a clear close button.
4. The variant can't be chosen
When size or colour must be selected first, the add button is often disabled until a choice is made. Custom swatches built from unlabeled images, or hidden radio inputs, make that choice hard to find. Give each option a visible text label.
5. Price and buy button only appear after heavy scripts
Some headless or heavily customised storefronts render the product area entirely in JavaScript. If it loads slowly or fails, an agent sees a spinner instead of a price. Server-rendered price and stock, plus Product structured data, give agents a fallback.
6. The cart or checkout step loops
Slide-out cart drawers that reopen, upsell modals between cart and checkout, or a checkout button that doesn't navigate anywhere can trap an agent in a loop. Test the path from product page to checkout with pop-ups and apps enabled, exactly as a new visitor sees it.
7. The store is password-protected or region-locked
A store behind a password page, or one that redirects visitors by location to a different storefront, may simply not be reachable for an agent running elsewhere.
How to test your own store
- Open your store in a private window, as a first-time visitor.
- Go to a product with variants, pick one, add it to the cart and reach the checkout page. Note every pop-up or extra click.
- Check
yourstore.com/robots.txtfor rules that block AI crawlers. - Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test to confirm price and stock are machine-readable.
Our paid audit runs this path automatically on Shopify stores: it adds one in-stock item to a temporary cart and opens the checkout page, without entering any details or placing an order.
Check your own store
Our free check looks at your robots.txt, llms.txt and one product page in a few seconds, no signup. The full $29 audit scans up to 8 pages, tests whether an AI agent can reach checkout, and gives copy-paste Shopify fixes.
