How to get your Shopify products into ChatGPT
Updated October 22, 2026
Shopify stores don't need to apply anywhere: OpenAI says Shopify product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. What you still control is the quality of that data, whether OpenAI's search crawler can read your site, and whether your product pages say clearly what you sell, at what price, and on what terms.
How ChatGPT chooses products
When a question has shopping intent, ChatGPT can show a product carousel with images, prices and links to buy. According to OpenAI's help article on shopping, it considers:
- Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers, such as price and product description;
- the shopper's query and context, for example a budget they mentioned;
- OpenAI's safety standards and product policies.
OpenAI also says product results are selected independently and are not ads. You can't pay to be in the carousel, so the work is making your products easy to understand and trust.
What Shopify already does for you
OpenAI states that for merchants on Shopify, product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and no extra work is required from individual merchants. That means your titles, descriptions, prices, variants and stock flow from your Shopify admin. If that data is thin or messy, that's what ChatGPT gets.
What's still yours to fix
- Let OpenAI's search crawler in. OpenAI uses
OAI-SearchBotto show websites in ChatGPT search. Sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs). Check yourrobots.txtfor a rule that blocks it, or a blanketDisallow: /underUser-agent: *. BlockingGPTBotis a separate choice: it only covers model training. - Write product titles and descriptions for a reader who can't see the photo. Say what the item is, what it's made of, sizes, and who it's for. "The Classic" tells an AI nothing; "The Classic, 100% merino crew-neck sweater" does.
- Fill in product identifiers. Add barcodes (GTIN/UPC/EAN) and SKUs in Shopify where you have them. Identifiers help any system match your product to the same item elsewhere.
- Keep price and stock accurate. ChatGPT may show your price; OpenAI notes there can be a delay when merchants change prices. Avoid "from $0" placeholders and out-of-stock items left visible with no label.
- Publish clear policies. Shipping, returns, refunds and contact pages, linked from every page. Shoppers ask AI assistants about returns and delivery, and the answer has to come from somewhere.
- Make product pages readable without JavaScript tricks. If price and the buy button only appear after scripts run, some automated readers may miss them. Most Shopify themes are fine; heavy custom or headless builds are worth checking.
Going further: a direct product feed
OpenAI also offers a direct product feed for merchants who want ChatGPT to always reflect their latest product information; it's linked from the same help article. For most small Shopify stores, Shopify Catalog plus clean product data is the practical starting point.
How to check where you stand
Read your robots.txt at yourstore.com/robots.txt, open a product page and ask yourself whether a stranger could tell what it is, what it costs and how returns work, and check that your barcodes are filled in. Or run our free check below, which looks at the crawler rules and one product page for you.
Check your own store
Our free check looks at your robots.txt, llms.txt and one product page in a few seconds, no signup. The full $29 audit scans up to 8 pages, tests whether an AI agent can reach checkout, and gives copy-paste Shopify fixes.
