Shopify product schema checklist for AI search
Updated October 22, 2026
Structured data is a small block of code (JSON-LD) on each product page that states the product's name, image, price and stock in a machine-readable way. Most Shopify themes output some of it. This checklist shows what Google asks for, so you can see what your theme is missing.
Why it matters
Search engines and AI assistants read pages faster and more reliably when facts are stated in a standard format instead of guessed from the layout. Google uses Product structured data for shopping features in Search, and OpenAI says ChatGPT's shopping results consider structured metadata such as price and description.
What Google requires
For merchant listings, Google's documentation lists three required Product properties:
name: the product name;image: one or more crawlable product photos;offers: anOfferwith the price and currency.
What Google recommends
- Availability inside the offer (in stock, out of stock, pre-order);
- Brand (
brand.name); - Product identifiers:
gtinandsku, ormpn; - Return policy (
hasMerchantReturnPolicy) and shipping details (shippingDetails); - Ratings (
aggregateRating), only if they reflect real reviews shown on the page.

How to see what your Shopify theme outputs
- Open one of your product pages and copy its URL.
- Paste it into Google's Rich Results Test.
- Look under "Product snippets" or "Merchant listings" for errors and warnings. Missing fields are listed by name.
Common gaps on Shopify stores
- No identifiers. The theme can only output a GTIN if the barcode field is filled in your Shopify admin.
- No return or shipping data. Many themes don't output these at all, even when the policy pages exist.
- Two competing Product blocks. A theme and a reviews app can each add one, with different prices or ratings. Keep one source of truth.
- Ratings without visible reviews. Don't mark up ratings shoppers can't see on the page.
Fixing it
Start with the admin: fill in barcodes, SKUs and vendor (brand). Then check the theme: many current themes already handle the basics. Return policy and shipping markup usually need a small theme edit or an app. Re-run the Rich Results Test after each change.
